We have a big class of over 150 students. Imagine 150 interns in this huge laboratory run mostly by student interns under the supervision of a few licensed medical technologists. It was fun and never without a few pranks here and there.
It was customary for the previous year’s interns to prank the newbies. My first rotation was Microbiology. We pretty much do everything there. We plate specimens, do subcultures and inoculate biochemical tubes, and make our own agar and broths for bacterial cultures.
One day, I was looking for something in the microbiology refrigerator, I came across a tin container with a label saying “Used Feminine Pads”.
Curious and disgusted at the same time, I asked an outgoing intern what it is for. With a straight face, he told me that the lab collects used feminine pads to make chocolate agar.
Wow! I can’t believe what I just heard! Moments later, he laughed so hard! I’m sure he saw the confused look on my face! 😀
