I worked as a processor in our Microbiology department. One time I was asked if I would like to volunteer for the Children’s Health Fair. To this I delightfully agreed!
It was a nice Saturday afternoon. I had several things set up. Swabs, agar plates, O&P kits, blood culture sets, pretty much anything involved in our department. We showed the kids how to collect a throat swab and even did some streaking on the plates. It was a lot of fun for the kids. Even made up a makeshift motto, “Our Cultures are a great diversity”. Some pun intended, of course!
When some of the kids came across a miniature doll house stool I placed in a stool container, they were instantly interested.
“What’s that? That’s cute!” said one of the kids.
“This is what you call a stool sample”, I replied.
The kids look confused, but one of the moms got the joke and laughed instantly! She just told her kid that she will explain it to him later. It was a fun time at the fair. 🙂
