Solution Dilution

Desired Volume

Desired Concentration

Initial Concentration

Calculator used to determine the amount of diluent need to get the desired concentration of a known solution.

Formula:

Initial Concentration (C1) x Initial Volume (V1) = Final Concentration (C2) x Final Volume (V2)
Volume of Diluent Needed = Final Volume (V2) – Initial Volume (V1)

Principle:

Dilution is the process of decreasing the concentration of a solute in a solution, usually simply by mixing with more solvent like adding more water to the solution. To dilute a solution means to add more solvent without the addition of more solute. The resulting solution is thoroughly mixed so as to ensure that all parts of the solution are identical.

Example:

How much water should you add to a 10% bleach solution to obtain 1ml of 5% bleach solution?
Desired Volume = 1
Desired Concentration = 5
Initial Concentration = 10
Press Calculate.
Answer: You need to add 0.5ml of water to 0.5ml of 10% bleach
