i heard about that too. How is that even possible? Most of them don’t understand the science of half of what we do in the lab. I don’t understand the reasoning behind it. It’s not like they have a spare nurse who can do lab work in their spare time 🥴

And the scariest thing is when they bring us unlabeled tubes, try to swap anticoagulated blood into diff tubes, don’t understand the why’s of clotted or hemolyzed specimen integrity etc. No telling how many patients would be harmed in the first week if they were running a lab

Nurses and lab professionals are both in demand professions with significant workforce shortages right now. It’s not like there are extra nurses out there that can “help” the lab. technically, if you have enough “science” credits, you can do high complexity testing. I’ve trained a lab assistant to do blood bank and all she had was a degree in Biology, not lab. She did really well under our supervision. Nurses don’t have enough science credits and that’s what CMS wants to change
