Determine the sample’s actual platelet count if it is collected in Sodium Citrate Anticoagulant.
Formula:
Actual Platelet Count (1000/uL) = Platelet Count (Na Citrate Sample) x 1.1
Principle:
Some samples exhibit in vitro platelet clumping if collected in EDTA sample. This will cause a falsely low platelet count. To mitigate this, sample is collected in Sodium Citrate Tube. Since the anticoagulant ratio is different (1:5) in a Sodium Citrate tube versus an EDTA tube, the result is multiplied by 1.1.
